Water quality of the two important rivers of the country Ganga and Yamuna was tested.By compared to the Ganga ,Yamuna river water was considered as clear blue.This test was happened in 1909.About a century later,Yamuna is the most polluted river of the country.Industrialisation, urbanization and population growth lead to the increased level of pollution.YAP to clean the dirtiest river of the country formally launched in 1993.The YAP has so far completed two phases. Yamuna Action Plan-1 In 1977-78 Central pollution control board initiated a study to assess the status of pollution of River Yamuna over its 1200 km.This study revealed the major cause of pollution is discharge of domestic waste water into the river which is about two-third of the pollution.The remaining is the contribution of agriculture and industries.
